Why Your Wallet Choice Matters for Staking
Every guide to staking VTRS starts from the same assumption: that you already have a wallet ready to go. But for a lot of people getting into staking for the first time, that first step — setting up a crypto wallet for staking — is the part that actually causes the most hesitation.
Your wallet isn't just a place to "hold" VTRS. It's the tool you'll use to sign every staking transaction, receive every VNRG reward, and prove ownership of your funds on-chain. Get it set up correctly and staking becomes a five-minute task. Get it wrong — by using the wrong wallet type, skipping a backup, or connecting to a phishing site — and you risk losing access to your funds entirely.
This guide walks through exactly what a staking-ready wallet needs, how to set one up for the Vitreus network, and the security habits that keep your VTRS safe for the long haul.
Custodial vs Non-Custodial Wallets
Before choosing a specific wallet, it helps to understand the fundamental split in how crypto wallets work.
Custodial Wallets
A custodial wallet is one where a third party — typically a centralized exchange — holds your private keys on your behalf. You log in with a username and password, and the exchange handles the cryptography behind the scenes. This is convenient, but it means you don't actually control your tokens. If the exchange freezes your account, gets hacked, or goes insolvent, your funds are at risk.
More importantly for staking purposes: most exchanges will not let you delegate custodial funds directly to an external validator like VNRG Node. To stake on the Vitreus network, your VTRS needs to live in a wallet you control.
Non-Custodial Wallets
A non-custodial wallet gives you sole control of your private keys, usually represented as a 12- or 24-word seed phrase. Nobody — not the wallet provider, not VNRG Node, not Vitreus itself — can access your funds without that phrase. This is the wallet type required to delegate VTRS to a validator and earn staking rewards.
The trade-off is responsibility: there's no "forgot password" option. If you lose your seed phrase and your device, your funds are gone permanently. The security section below covers exactly how to avoid that.
Choosing the Right Wallet for VTRS
Vitreus is an EVM-compatible network, which means it works with the same wallet infrastructure used across Ethereum and other EVM chains. You have two broad categories to choose from.
Software Wallets (Hot Wallets)
Software wallets run as a browser extension or mobile app. They're free, take minutes to set up, and are the most common choice for staking VTRS.
- MetaMask — the most widely used EVM wallet, available as a browser extension and mobile app. Fully compatible with the Vitreus Collaborative Marketplace.
- Trust Wallet — a mobile-first alternative with built-in support for adding custom EVM networks.
- Rabby — a newer browser wallet with strong transaction-simulation features that flag suspicious contract calls before you sign.
Hardware Wallets (Cold Wallets)
Hardware wallets keep your private keys on a physical device, completely offline. They're the strongest security option, especially for larger staking positions. We cover this option in detail in our guide to hardware wallets for staking — in short, devices like Ledger or Trezor can be paired with MetaMask so you get hardware-level security with the same familiar staking interface.
Step-by-Step: Setting Up MetaMask for Vitreus
MetaMask is the most common starting point for VTRS staking, so here's the full setup process from scratch.
Download MetaMask from the Official Source
Go to metamask.io directly — never download a wallet from a link in an email, ad, or social media post. Install the browser extension or mobile app.
Create a New Wallet
Choose "Create a new wallet," set a strong local password, and MetaMask will generate your 12-word seed phrase. This password only unlocks the app on this device — it does not replace or protect your seed phrase.
Back Up Your Seed Phrase Offline
Write the 12 words down on paper, in order, and store them somewhere safe and private — never in a text file, email, cloud note, or screenshot. This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if your device is lost or damaged.
Add the Vitreus Network
By default, MetaMask only includes major networks like Ethereum. To interact with VTRS, you'll need to add the Vitreus network manually using the RPC details published at docs.vtrs.io. In MetaMask, go to the network dropdown → "Add Network" → "Add a network manually," and enter the network name, RPC URL, chain ID, and currency symbol exactly as documented.
Verify the Network Connection
Once added, switch to the Vitreus network in MetaMask's network selector. Your balance should show as 0 VTRS until you transfer funds in — that's expected and confirms the network was added correctly.
Funding Your Wallet with VTRS
With your wallet configured, the next step is moving VTRS into it.
- Buying directly: Purchase VTRS on a supported exchange, then withdraw it to your wallet's public address — never share your seed phrase to "receive" funds, only your public address is needed.
- Double-check the address: Copy your wallet's public address directly from MetaMask and paste it into the exchange's withdrawal field. Send a small test amount first if you're moving a large sum for the first time.
- Confirm on-chain: Transfers can take a few minutes to confirm. Use a Vitreus block explorer (linked from docs.vtrs.io) to track your transaction status if needed.
Once VTRS appears in your wallet balance, you're ready to delegate it to a validator and start earning rewards.
Wallet Security Best Practices
A staking wallet holds real value, so it's worth spending five extra minutes getting the fundamentals right. For a deeper dive, see our full guide to blockchain security best practices — the essentials specific to staking wallets are below.
Never share your seed phrase
No legitimate wallet provider, validator, or support agent will ever ask for your seed phrase. Anyone who asks for it — via email, DM, or a "support" chat — is attempting to steal your funds.
Bookmark official URLs
Phishing sites that mimic marketplace.vtrs.io are a real risk in crypto. Bookmark the official marketplace URL and access it only through that bookmark rather than search results or links shared in chats.
Use a hardware wallet for larger positions
If your staking position is significant, pairing MetaMask with a hardware wallet (see our hardware wallet guide) keeps your keys offline while still letting you sign staking transactions.
Keep your recovery phrase separate from your device
If your seed phrase is stored on the same device as your wallet — a screenshot, a note, a password manager entry synced to the cloud — a single device compromise can expose both. Physical, offline backups remain the gold standard.
Connecting Your Wallet to Stake
With a funded, secured wallet in hand, connecting to stake takes just a few clicks:
- Go to marketplace.vtrs.io and click "Connect" in the top right.
- Select MetaMask (or your chosen wallet) and approve the connection request.
- Browse validators — use our validator comparison page to evaluate uptime and commission rates — and select one to delegate to.
- Enter the amount of VTRS to stake and confirm the transaction in your wallet.
For the full walkthrough of the staking process itself, including how to find VNRG Node in the validator list, see our complete guide on how to stake VTRS.

Stake VTRS Now → Estimate My RewardsFrequently Asked Questions
Do I need a special wallet just for VTRS?
No. Any EVM-compatible non-custodial wallet — MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Rabby, or a hardware wallet paired with one of these — works for VTRS staking once the Vitreus network is added.
Can I stake directly from an exchange wallet?
Generally no. Staking VTRS with an external validator requires a non-custodial wallet you control, since the delegation transaction is signed on-chain from your own address. Withdraw your VTRS to a personal wallet first.
What happens if I lose my device?
As long as you have your seed phrase backed up, you can restore your wallet — and access to your staked VTRS — on a new device. This is exactly why the offline backup step matters so much.
Is it safe to connect my wallet to the Vitreus marketplace?
Yes, as long as you're on the official URL (marketplace.vtrs.io). Connecting a wallet only shares your public address and requests transaction approvals — it never exposes your seed phrase or private keys.
Should I use a new wallet just for staking?
Many experienced stakers do use a dedicated wallet for staking activity, separate from a wallet used for everyday transactions or NFT trading. This limits exposure if one wallet is ever compromised.
